After visiting Japan a few years ago I came back with more knowledge of that particular country and have certainly a list of paintings I would love to do featuring various aspects of it. Top of that list is of the cherry blossom trees that are revered as the end of winter and beginning of spring. But as well as the beauty of nature, there is the historical warrior aspect that Japan is noted for, and this oil painting I’ve completed recently celebrates that to a great extent.
The Samurai in his blue tunic kneels on the grassy earth, his eyes slightly downcast in a pensive state as he contemplates his last battle, and readies himself for the next. The bamboo backdrop behind him frames him in his natural environment and the colours of his clothing are utilised in the background to bring unity to the scene.
