Waterfall in all its glory

Here it is, at long last, the waterfall painting that I’ve been working on for a while, when I refer to it as a waterfall painting, it is actually three waterfalls in the painting, the towering cliffs in the background with the main torrent plummeting down, then the mid section tumbling waterfall then the smaller rapids waterfall below it, all leading on to a peaceful placid rock pool in the foreground. I love the sense of power within the water, and the passage of water within the landscape and the trees in the mid section on the left hand side are sunlit, I love the rocky outcrop with the twisted tree on the right hand side opposite it, I love the distant hills, the sense of grandeur and looking at this scene. I have never painted this sort of waterfall and love it, I love painting water at the best of times and have fallen in love with this painting as I’ve created it.

It had to be painted in the order of the sky, and distant rocky cliff, then the rock face to the left of the picture, then the cliffs, then the main waterfall, the the mid waterfall, then the lower waterfall rapids, then the sunlight rocky outcrop in the middle to the left hand side, then the rocky outcrop in the mid section on the right hand side, then the rocky pool and water in the foreground. I used the same colours throughout to make it harmonious, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, bright blue, white. There is no black paint in it, the darks were made with a mix of burnt sienna and ultramarine. The canvas is a block canvas so I had to continue the painting around the edges to the top, bottom and sides. The painting is already hanging on my wall and I love the way that as I walk past it the painting continues around the edges, it adds more interest to it I think.

The painting is in acrylics on block canvas, measuring 23.5 x 12 inches, and is called ‘The silence beneath the thunder’ which I think is perfect for it too…what do you think?
