One of the joys of living in Kent is knowing that if I fancy going to the coast its only an hours drive away….
I always enjoy visiting Ramsgate as it has so many interesting aspects to explore and take photos of…. the town, cliffs, beaches, and of course the harbour full of yachts and boats, ships and marine businesses.
When we first arrived there this week we had a wander around the harbour, a bite to eat and cup of tea, then a walk along to the beaches, the promenade, then into the town and back to the harbour again, the whole visit taking more than two hours, we walked along the harbour wall towards the lighthouse when we first arrived, and then again just before we were about to leave… and what astonished me as a photographer, and artist, was the difference in the same subject in the different lighting….

The first photo I took when we first arrived was in the flat light of a slightly overcast day, the stone lighthouse stood out slightly from the background sky and not a lot more to look at.

As I walked around to the over side of the lighthouse, the sun was more obvious trying to break through the clouds and made it look so much more dramatic.

But two hours later when the sun was lower in the sky and the clouds looked heavier with rain it changed the look of the lighthouse was the clouds were darker than the lighthouse stones and the white bollards.

And around the lighthouse again as the sun wasn’t covered with clouds the lighthouse was dark against the sky and looked even more dramatic.

Such diverse lighting making such dramatic differences, always exciting to see as an artist…and I bet you can guess which one I prefer best….
