Well oiled and decidedly smelly

Each media has its own merits, and if you were to ask me which I preferred the most, I would honestly struggle to answer since I love the character of them all – watercolours for their spontaneous reaction to water can create some magical effects, pastel is instant colour in a bar of pure pigment reacting instantly to the paper without worry for how much water to mix with it to get the correct shade of colour. Acrylics can be as translucent as watercolours or bright and bold and textured. But oils, oils make me smile when I use them, and I think its because of the way they softly merge together in buttery swirls of shape and colour, and of course, they come with their own particular odour, which I love. I love the smell of the oil paints, and the smell of the linseed oil, and the smell of the turps. And yesterday when I unwrapped it, I found myslef sniffing the new canvas as well, as that had a clean textile smell about it too. Its a very sensual experience, creating an oil painting. And this one is one I shall really enjoy doing, as its erotic 🙂

I’ve not done one of those for a while, and I’ve missed it. Like I’ve missed the oils.

I know the subject matter, since I’ve discussed it with the clients and they were quite clear in their description – loving, tasteful, erotic, sensual.  And I know the pose they want to be featured in, since I took the photos for them. Any of the poses they put themselves in (very easily I was pleased to note, since it shows an ease of character with such a laid back approach) would have worked, but I applauded the one they opted for, since it showed them at their best. Size was stated (of canvas, before you get too excited!) and the rest is up to me. I know what they want, and advised that oils was the best, by far, way of depicting it.

I drew out the outline of the image of them from the photo, then adjusted it in subtle ways to create the best body shape for them both. Because there isn’t a woman on this planet who is totally happy with her body size, whatever age or body shape she is. But, I didn’t want to enhance it so much that the woman ends up looking like Barbie and there’s nothing remaining of the real her! And that took longer than I had envisaged, because it was a toning up of some areas – arms, legs, stomach etc, without anyone looking at the finished painting noticing that had been done. Subtle, of course, very subtle.

When that was done, I could transfer that image to the blank canvas using pencil again, and stand back to make sure that it all looked right. And then it was the exciting part! Colour! But, not oils, not yet, no, the undercoat is in acrylics to give depth of colour to the oils as the top coat. The acrylics were put on as basic blocks of colour, for the tones and shapes of the two bodies as they interacted together. And after that had been done, it was now time for the oils. Yay!

And it shows how much I was looking forward to painting it, that after a full days work already, I started the undercoat of oils at gone 9 last night, rather than waiting until today, in daylight, to do it. No, I can’t wait, its gotta be NOW!

Rock and dance music playing to help get me motivated, mug of hot tea to hand, and one paint brush just to mix the colours and get them on the canvas as the first blocks of oil colour. Knowing, that in the subsequent days I would add more colour, build up the subtle tones, adding darks to create form, and finally adding highlights to bring it all to life. And I bet you’re wondering why I don’t just add one colour, once, and be done with it. And I could do that, certainly, but it wouldn’t be so subtle, and wouldn’t look so joined together if I was to do that, it would look – well, more harsh.

It’s a waiting game, oils.

Waiting for one layer to dry before the next can be added. But, also, starting to add colour whilst it’s partly dry, so the colours merge with gentle blending.

But, it’s worth it. Undoubtedly!

And the pose? Well, they’re both kneeling, facing the viewer. She is slightly in front of him, so his cock is half hidden behind her, her breasts and fanny (English fanny, not American fanny! you’d think she was a contortionist otherwise!) are fully on show, and she is looking at him and smiling slightly, as she reaches around with her left arm around his neck, perhaps to pull him close in a kiss, or caress his shoulder. Her right hand is hanging down at her thigh as if she is considering what to do next (and the whole point of erotic art is that it should suggest that something is just about to happen ). His right hand can just be seen behind her at her waist and his left hand is open and reaching down across  her stomach, as if it is about to caress her in a very intimate place, as he looks at her face, and smiles. It shows a couple of many years standing, at ease with each other, and their nudity.

And I can’t wait to get the next gentle sensual layer of paint on…so that it starts to look like this one that I did some years ago “Naked desire” – isn’t she lovely?
